Know of a financial course/seminar that teaches personal finance–bills, savings etc. In Houston if local?
Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008My husband and I struggle to get all the bills paid each month and have no savings to fall back on. We desperately need to learn how to approach our finances in a different way, or we’ll be headed for bankruptcy. An online course or something we can attend in person in Houston would be great! Please help..
Why are some people so incompetent with running businesses or managing personal finances?
Friday, July 11th, 2008I worked for a guy that owned a restaurant like Quiznos or Subway. He kept it open about 3 hours too early and 3-4 hours too late everyday. He also wanted the place to make money too. Since it did deliveries, we were always in a real jam at lunch and dinner because we didn’t have enough people. He also wanted us to get out right after we closed, instead of cleaning the place properly. He’s now about to lose it for failing his franchise reports and health inspections. My senior manager can’t convince him to look at the numbers and make the hours more sensible. His lovely house was collateral to get the franchises. Oh, did I mention he got a second location and put it in a ridiculous place everyone knew wasn’t going to make money?
My dad is a doctor and makes six-figures. He’s almost 60 and nearly broke, and he doesn’t even live the high life. He hates his job, works for less than he’s worth even when he gets about 10 offers a week in the mail. When other people were getting their houses foreclosed, he almost lost his because he wanted to write a book instead of work. He could honestly be retired if he managed his money better. He puts himself in a voluntary financial crisis.
What is wrong with these people? Why can’t some people handle their business?

Personal finance and love of fashion (they don’t mix!)?
Monday, July 7th, 2008I absolutely love clothes, shoes and accessories. However, I also have a lot of goals (owning my own home, funding my retirement, etc.). While I consider myself reasonably frugal (i.e. I don’t just blow bundles of cash and often buy things at thrift stores) clothing and accessories are easily my biggest expense after rent/food…and my income is a modest one.
Fellow budget fashionistas: how do you reign in your love of shopping? Do you give yourself a budget? I don’t have one and honestly have no idea how much I spend (although I’m not in debt).

young adults out there (17-21) have the spirit to become successful in personal investing?
Saturday, July 5th, 2008I am very interested in investing and personal finance. I just finished Rich Dad Poor Dad and loved it, and have since purchsed books on beating the stock market, as well as Real Estate tips. I am just trying to get some resources, maybe you have heard of sites or programs to help kids our age become successful in finance.
the first site i offer up: sharebuilder.com a great resource for learning the basics of investing, i received the sharebuilder lessons by e-mail and they were very informative.
