Personal question- family finances?

I have the rare “joy” of being married to a man who is terrible with money. He habitually writes bad checks, refuses to delay gratification, and doesn’t like to keep a job for more than about 9 months. We’ve been married 7 years, and still don’t have a dime in savings. We don’t even own a home! I have managed to get us out of some of the red ink he’s gotten us into.

The crux of the problem is that we can’t have children. Yes we want them, so we will have to adopt, or have a surrogate. Both these options are a little more expensive, and require a little more planning and pro-active participation than the route most couples take to parenthood.
So- How do I help my husband learn sound financial habits? (Self discipline, budgeting, follow-through…)
Feel free to email or IM (evenings are best) me if you have questions.
